Perfect Shot

“Perfect Shot” by Matt Hubert © 2006

All of Salt Lake City stares
at one bald-headed Bull’s
picture perfect release
of the orange and black ball.
Every eye in the arena follows
one last second shot.
They dare not blink
with 6.6 on the clock.

Time stops—
just long enough
to let the highlight reels roll
inside the minds of fans
with hands upon heads in disbelief.

Four poor Jazz wait
helplessly for a rebound
that will never come.
The jersey reads Jordan:
the shot will go in.
The shot must go in.
A series, a season, a career
capped off and captured
in one spectacular shot.
